Registering Private Nameservers
To use your own nameservers, you must register them with your domain name registrar. You must know the the IP addresses you wish to use for your nameservers prior to registering them. You will need 1 IP for each nameserver.
The process will vary depending on who you have chosen as your domain registrar. For your convenience, we have compiled a list of of instructions for a few prominent registrars. They are:
DirectNIC
- Click on Domain Manager.
- Click the Change nameserver information icon next to your domain.
- Click the Create Nameserver link at the top of the page.
- Enter your nameserver name.
- Enter the corresponding IP address.
- Click Create Nameserver.
Enom
- Click Select domain names.
- Click Register DNS.
- Use the Register a Nameserver Name tool in the first section of the page to create your nameserver.
Godaddy
- Under the Domains heading, click My Domains.
- Click on the domain for which you would like to set up your nameservers.
- Click Add under Host Summary at the bottom left of the screen.
- Type ns1 in the Host Name field.
- Input your IP address into the Host IP 1 field.
- Click OK.
- Repeat this process using ns2 for the Host Name field.
Network Solutions
- Click Manage host Servers at the bottom left of the screen.
- If this link fails to appear, use the following URL: https://www.networksolutions.com/en_US/manage-it/manage-nameservers.jhtml
- Enter your hostname into the first dialog box.
- Click Continue.
- Enter the IP address.
- Click Continue.
- Confirm the changes to the host server.
- Click Apply Change.
- Click Back to Account Manager Home.
- Click OK.
Register.com
- Click on your domain name.
- Click the Advanced Technical Settings link.
- Click Manage Registered Name Servers.
- Scroll down to REGISTER NAME SERVER.
- Enter the desired prefix for the DNS Server.
- Enter the IP Address (A Record) in the next field.
- Click Continue.
