Converting to Maildir

Take these steps to convert your mail storage system from mbox to Maildir.

Important: The conversion process may take up to 24 hours depending on your server’s hardware and number of accounts. You will not be able to send and receive mail while the server is converting, so this process should take place at an off-peak time. Incoming mail will be queued during the conversion.

To convert your mail storage system to Maildir:

1. Click the Convert Accounts to Maildir button.
2. Make sure to click Next on the following page to back up your data.
   • We highly recommend that you back up your server before running the conversion.
3. Click Next after the backup is complete.
4. Select the mail server you would like to use.
   • Convert using Courier mailserver — This mail server is intended for use with older systems.
   • Convert using Dovecot mailserver — This is the recommended mail server, as it offers many improvements in performance.
5. Click Convert to start the process.
   • The conversion process may take up to 24 hours depending on your server’s hardware and number of accounts.
   • You will not be able to send and receive mail while the server is converting, so this process should take place at an off-peak time. Incoming mail will be queued during the conversion.

Warning: Do not cancel the process as it will result in a broken mail system.
