Change Hostname

For WHM version 11.32

This feature allows you to change your server's hostname.

Your hostname is the name by which your physical web server will be known across the Internet. It is important to choose a hostname that will not be used for a cPanel account, is socially acceptable (as it will appear in mail headers), and is a fully qualified domain name (FQDN — this will contain 2 dots, ‘.’). Your hostname should not begin with “www” or a number, nor end with a hyphen (“-”). FQDNs must also be written in lowercase letters. These requirements can be reviewed under the Instructions heading, on the main Hostname page.

Your current hostname is displayed in the first information box under Current Hostname.

To change your hostname:

  1. Enter the new hostname into the New Hostname field.
    • PICK Remember: Your new hostname must be an FQDN, must be registered, and must follow the instructions dictated under the Instructions heading.
  2. Click Change.

After the hostname is changed, you will be prompted to add an A entry.

  1. Proceed by clicking the Add An A Entry for your hostname button.
  2. Review the information about your server and, if it is correct, click Add Entry. The A entry should configure and add itself to your server automatically.
