Overview

For flexibility in a Linux® environment, we recommend that you preconfigure a simple partition scheme with as few partitions as possible.

Advanced partitions

Before you follow the recommendations in the table below, be aware that you may outgrow these guidelines, based on how you use your server.

Note:

With the exception of the  / and  swap partitions, all of the following partitions are optional.

This partition contains kernels and the boot loader configuration file.

/usr16 GB recommended minimum

This partition contains the following items:

  • cPanel & WHM files
  • Apache files and logs
  • Most of the files for other applications
/var

16 GB recommended minimum 

This partition contains the following items:

  • MySQL® databases
  • cPanel & WHM configuration files
  • System logs
  • The mail queue
/home

Grow to fill disk 

This partition contains cPanel user accounts.
/tmp

2 GB 

This partition contains temporary files.

Note:

You may use securetmp regardless of this setting.

swapTwice the server's RAMThis partition contains RAM overflow that the system can write to the hard disk.
