How to Manage the AI Assistant

Last modified: 2026 October 2

Overview

The AI Assistant is a chat panel in the Meridian theme. It answers your cPanel users’ questions about their accounts and, if you allow it, makes changes for them after they approve each change.

For a description of what your users see and what the assistant can do, read our Using the AI Assistant documentation.

Enable the AI Assistant

Two features in Feature Manager control the AI Assistant. A user can only use a capability when you enable the feature for the cPanel account.

Feature Capability
AI Assistant Answer questions and look up account information.
AI Assistant and AI Assistant Actions Make changes after the user approves them.

Turn on the features for your users

To give your users access to the AI Assistant, perform the following steps:

  1. Navigate to WHM’s Feature Manager interface (WHM » Home » Packages » Feature Manager).
  2. Select the feature list that you want to edit from the Manage feature list menu and click Edit.
  3. Select the AI Assistant checkbox.
  4. To allow the assistant to make changes, select the AI Assistant Actions checkbox.
  5. Click Save.
Note:

The default feature list enables the AI Assistant feature and disables the AI Assistant Actions feature.

When the assistant does not offer to make a change

When the assistant can make a change, it shows the user an Approval required card before it makes the change. If a user asks for a change, such as a new email account, and no card appears, make sure that the account’s feature list enables both the AI Assistant and AI Assistant Actions features.

The assistant never offers a card for a request that would not change anything, or for a request that it declines as out of scope. For a list of those requests, read our Using the AI Assistant documentation.

Usage limits

The AI Assistant limits how much each cPanel account can use it each day. Each account can use up to:

  • 100 requests. Each message that the user sends, and each change that the user approves, counts as one request.
  • 200,000 estimated tokens. A token is a small unit of text that the AI Assistant processes.

The account reaches its limit when it uses up either amount first. To estimate tokens, the assistant counts everything it sends and receives while it answers a request. This includes the earlier messages in the conversation and every lookup that it runs. Long conversations and requests that look up a lot of account information use tokens faster, so an account can reach the token limit after far fewer than 100 requests.

The limits use a fixed 24-hour period, not a calendar day. The period starts with the account’s first request and ends 24 hours later. The account’s next request after that starts a new period with a full allowance.

When an account reaches its limit, the assistant displays the following message:

You've reached the AI Assistant usage limit for now. Please try again later.

The limits are the same for every cPanel license type and every package. There is no supported way to change these limits.

Check an account’s usage

No interface displays AI Assistant usage. To check an account’s usage for the current period, run the following command as the root user, where username represents the cPanel account’s username:

cat /var/cpanel/ai/usage/user-username.json

The output resembles the following example:

{"asks":12,"day_start":1705312800,"est_tokens":48210}

The file contains the following values:

Value Description
asks The number of requests in the current period.
day_start The start of the current period, in Unix time. The period ends 86,400 seconds (24 hours) after this value.
est_tokens The number of estimated tokens in the current period.

If the day_start value is more than 24 hours in the past, the period has already ended. The file keeps the old values until the account’s next request starts a new period.

The /var/cpanel/ai/usage/service.json file uses the same format to record the total for the whole server.

The Link WebPros Account and Unlink WebPros Account buttons in the MCP Connection section of the cPanel Account Preferences interface belong to the MCP Connection feature, not to the AI Assistant. Users do not need a WebPros account to use the AI Assistant. For more information about this section, read our Connect to MCP documentation.

To hide the MCP Connection section, deselect the MCP Connection feature in WHM’s Feature Manager interface (WHM » Home » Packages » Feature Manager).
